Residency is not necessary to visit or live in the Dominican Republic, but it can make life easier and more convenient in various ways like getting through the airport, opening bank accounts, getting loans etc.

There are 2 parts to the residency process with the first stage to acquire the temporary residency and then after that to go for the permanent residency. You don’t have to give up your home citizenship to have residency as residency in the DR is NOT citizenship.

For citizenship you would have to denounce your citizenship in your home country and give up that passport. You would gain the right to vote in the DR. With residency you don’t have to give up anything and would not have the right to vote in the DR, but maintain all your rights in your home country as they have always been.
