1. This country is a collection of 2 large islands (Antigua and Barbuda) and 35 small islands. These were discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493
2. The name is given by Christopher Columbus. Antigua means Ancient and Barbuda means Beard in Spanish. Nobody knows why Columbus named the islands like that
4. There are no rivers in any of the islands of this country except 3 streams in Antigua which has flow during rainy seasons
5. Antiguans treat their National Sport “Cricket” like more than a religion, it is played almost everywhere in the country. Other than cricket, Antiguans and Barbudans popular sports are Spot Fishing, Wind Surfing and Kite Surfing
6. VIV Richards is from Antigua and Barbuda’s capital city St. John’s
7. The highest peak in this country was known as Boggy Peak until 2009 but later the name was changed to Mount Obama to honor US President
8. English brought several west african slaves to this country to grow Tobacco and Sugar. Their slavery finally stopped in 1834
9. The local residents celebrate their freedom from slavery with a colorful 10-day carnival from July end to beginning of August. Barbuda celebrate their carnval in June
10. There is one uninhabited island in this country which is known as Redonda which is home for beautiful species of birds
11. It is said that there are soo many beaches in this country that we can visit one beach per day through out year without repeating a beach twice
12. The Antigua black pineapple is the official fruit which is known as the sweetest pineapple in this world with high sugar content and low acidity
13. During September 2017 , 95% of Barbuda was destroyed by hurricane Irma, Thankfully residents were shifted to Antigua beforehand hence there was deathtoll of only 3 people
