Today I’m going to talk about three different ways you can get obtain a second citizenship.
On this channel, we talk a lot about citizenship by investment programs. However, these often come with a hefty price tag, therefore are not an option for everyone.

What if you can’t afford citizenship by investment but still are looking for a second passport? Are there some options for you? Yes, of course, there are! They’re not so fast and straightforward as CBI programs, sometimes they require a lot of hassle but it is what it is.

The most common way people get a second passport is naturalization. If you have the time this is the most practical way. You need to go and live in another country for some years, and after that, you can become eligible for their citizenship. In many cases, in order to naturalize, you will need to learn the language, immerse yourself in the local culture, and know about the history of that country. This usually ranges from 5-10 years, even though it’s possible to get in in 2 or 3 years in some countries. There are countries that require you to live there for 20 years before you naturalize.

Another common way that many people use to get second citizenship is the descent option. If you qualify for this lucky you! This option is common for people of European origin. Some countries will give you a passport if your grandparents lived in that country (or had citizenship). Depending on the country this process takes around 2 years. If you can do this you should totally go for it.

The last thing you can do is get a passport through marriage. Some countries will grant you their passport much faster if you marry their citizen. Cape Verde for example will give you the passport immediately if you marry a local.
