As blocks of lava tumbled down the Cumbre Vieja volcano \u2014 some as big as a house \u2014 red-hot lava streams hardened and caked over the village of La Laguna in Los Llanos de Aridane on Thursday on Spain’s La Palma island.<\/p>\n

Residents of La Laguna were evacuated Wednesday evening as the lava stream became dangerously close.<\/p>\n

Since the first eruption began on Sept.19, rivers of red-hot lava have engulfed almost 800 hectares of land, destroying about 2,000 buildings and many banana plantations.<\/p>\n

More than 6,000 people have had to leave their homes.<\/p>\n
