I’m applying for Italian citizenship! I am half Italian. My great-grandparents came to America from Italy. When my grandfather was born in America, my great-grandfather had not yet renounced his Italian citizenship so my grandfather was born an Italian citizen. In Italy, citizenship is determined by blood, not location of birth.
Upon this discovery, I have decided to apply for Italian citizenship, in order to honor my Italian heritage. I will need to get all releavant documentation gathered, such as birth and marriage certificates, that prove my eligibility for citizenship. Once that is done, the documents need to be translated into Italian. Once documents are approved through Apostille, the Italian authorities will decide whether or not I can become a citizen. As of right now, I plan on doing the process in person in Italy. Overall, this entire process from start to finish is estimated to take 1-2 years.
So far, I am in the process of gathering documentation. Once that is complete, it will be sent off for translation. Once I have a new update, I’ll let you all know.
