Nick Timothy, columnist, author and former No. 10 Chief of Staff to PM Theresa May, spoke at the New Culture Forum’s fringe event, held during the 2022 Conservative Party Conference. He argued that we live in a society in which left-wing doublethink is completely entrenched. And if you break the rules of this doublethink orthodoxy, rules which are contradictory and forever changing, you face ostracization, reputational destruction & professional death. In short, the complete ruin of your life and career.
Afraid of these punishments, most people try to stick to the rules, whatever they might think of them. They play the game, say the right things and participate in the rituals, thus bending to the ideology of militant identity politics.
But, like those who lived under the dictatorship of eastern Europe, we know that much of this is based on lies. We know that the academics, activists, HR managers and diversity officers are telling lies; and often we repeat the lies ourselves because we know that’s what we have to do. Our institutions, both public and private, are now tightly controlled. It’s nonsense. But this will continue until enough of us say enough is enough and reject it.
Nick Timothy is former Chief of Staff to Theresa May, a columnist for the Daily Telegraph and the author of Remaking One Nation: The Future of Conservatism. Nick is also a Visiting Professor at Sheffield University and an adviser to the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China.
