Having a criminal record is a problem when doing citizenship by investment. While some of the programs may possibly accept you for a DUI for alcohol for example, provided you have a more serious criminal offense such as an offense for assault than you cannot be accepted. A lot of the citizenship by investment programs have in their laws that if you have a criminal record you cannot be accepted as a citizen through investment.
We once had a client who had a criminal record for something that is not considered a crime in some of the Caribbean countries that offer citizenship by investment. Without giving specifics we were able to successfully build a case that the client should be accepted for citizenship based on the fact that it is not a crime in the Caribbean country.
Provided you have a criminal record or any sort of issue it would be important to declare this to the local authorized agent helping you with your application so they can determine in advance if it is something that can be accepted. You don’t give someone your money if it can be known in advance that the outcome is not going to be successful.
