Welcome to Immigration Investment Frequently Asked Questions. In episode 33, Georgina Wray, Immigration Investment Reporter, answers your question ‘What is the difference between citizenship, residency and a passport?’
Holding citizenship of a country means you can live, work, study and vote in that country. It is very difficult to loose citizenship once you have it. If obtained through citizenship by investment, it can only be lost if false information was provided during the citizenship by investment application process.
Residency status is an impermanent status that yields fewer rights, some residency by investment countries allow residents to live there, and some allow residents to live and work there. But generally all residency by investment programmes require persons to meet certain physical presence requirements to retain their residency status. Resident status can expire and can easily be revoked.
A passport is a travel document that can also be used to prove their citizenship status. However, birth certificates or naturalisation certificates are better documents to use when proving citizenship. There are different kinds of passports, the common one being an ordinary passport but diplomatic and service passports also exist which do not require the holder to be a citizen of that issuing country.
