The Antigua and Barbuda Government, by extension the Minister of Health, Wellness and Environment, the Hon. Minister Molwyn Joseph has collaborated with the Medical Benefits Scheme (MBS) to begin the journey of establishing a “Proposed National Health Insurance (NHI) “.
This aim is in-line with the agreement of all UN Member States to achieve universal health coverage (UHC) by 2030, as part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) introduced at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro in 2012.
The introduction of such a health financing mechanism seeks to address developing challenges in the current health system. Above all, the financial burden and limited access to essential health services are among the major issues that involve increasing cost of health services and increasing demand for health care needs of the population.
