Mehul Choksi was the mastermind of the Rs 13,000 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case. He ran away from India and has been staying in Antigua and Barbuda since January 2018. Choksi is a citizen of Antigua based on citizenship by investment program. According to the Antiguan laws, their citizens cannot be extradited to another country. This is why Indian can not force Antigua to send Choksi back to India. On 23rd May he disappeared from the country. News spread everywhere and people started to say that again Mehul Choksi disappeared. He was then arrested in Dominica for allegedly entering the island nation “illegally”. Images of his went viral where he can be seen behind bars and has injury marks and bruises on his hand and wrist.
However, Mehul Choksi’s lawyer Vijay Aggarwal on 30th May said, “All these theories of Mehul Choksi running away from Antigua are nonsense. Firstly, he was happily living in Antigua without any problem. So why would he voluntarily leave? Secondly, his passport is still in Antigua. If Choksi really wanted to leave, he would have taken his passport with him. Why would he leave it? Choksi was “abducted” from Antigua and Barbuda, by men looking like Indian and Antiguan policemen. The lawyer also said Choksi was “badly beaten up”, tortured and then forcibly taken to Dominica by boat, where he was arrested and suffered bruises.”
The Antigua and Barbuda police chief, Atlee Rodney said, there is no proof that Choksi was abducted, tortured and forcibly taken to Dominica. The Antigua police were not at all involved in all this. Meanwhile, Antigua and Barbuda PM Gaston Browne has made sensational claims over the mysterious disappearance of Mehul Choksi. He said, “Mehul Choksi made a mistake and the information we are getting is that Choksi travelled with his girlfriend but he was caught in Dominica and now he can be deported back to India.” The matter of the alleged kidnapping, torture and illegal arrest of Mehul Choksi is pending before the Dominican High Court. Indian officials have landed in Dominica to secure custody of Mehul Choksi. Documents are being presented to the Dominican authorities to convince them that Choksi is a fugitive and should be deported directly to India. The court has restrained Mehul Choksi’s repatriation to any other country till the next hearing slated for June 2. Gaston Browne has also communicated to the Dominican Government that Choksi should be sent to India and not returned to Antigua.
