Spousal Sponsorship
Through the popular Spousal Sponsorship Category (part of the Family Class immigration), you can bring your partner over to Canada quickly.
However, this option requires that one of you be a Canadian permanent resident. As soon as you get your residency, you can sponsor your partner to also get residency.
Sponsor applicants must meet the below requirements:
At least 18 years of age
Be a Canadian permanent resident living in Canada/Canadian citizen
No criminal history
Cannot have been sponsored as a spouse within the last five years
Express Entry Dual Applicant
A couple wishing to apply for permanent residence through Express Entry has two options: either the main applicant names the spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner as a dependent or they name them as a secondary applicant.
Your partner’s points gained through age, level of education and language proficiency will also contribute to your overall comprehensive ranking system score.
You’ll both have your own set of information, including proof of sufficient funds to support each person.
It’s important to consider which partner has the strongest profile before applying in order to name that person as the main applicant. Suppose your partner would score highly in the above categories. In that case, it’s worth listing them as a secondary applicant but if they would score poorly, consider listing them as a dependent instead.
Apply as a Dependant
If you choose to apply for your partner to join you in Canada as a dependent, you’ll have to provide proof that you have enough money to take care of your partner while you live in Canada.
