Green card through marriage explained|| If an international student married to a U.S citizen?
What happens when an F1 student marries a US citizen?
The process is pretty straightforward. First, the U.S. citizen submits an I-130 and the international student submits an I-485 to change their status to lawful permanent resident.
After you submit these forms and some other forms you will also have to submit documents that show that the U.S. citizen can support the foreign national and will not become a public charge.
Once all of these steps have been completed the foreign national will receive a work and travel card, which will allow the foreign national to obtain a Social Security number so that they can start building a life together with the U.S. citizen.
From here the next step is their interview at USCIS, which we practice with our clients before the real thing. If they pass the interview they will receive their Green Card and have the ability to apply for citizenship after a few years.
