Investor visas are one of the best ways to get permanent residency in Australia. If you want to move to Australia and you have the means to invest five million Australian dollars, the 188 Significant Investor visa might be ideal for you.
There are four streams of the 188 visa, depending on how much you are able to invest, but the Significant Investor visa offers the most benefits.
The perks of the Significant Investor visa are:
• Unlike other visas, there is no upper age limit. This means it doesn’t matter how old you are.
• No points test;
• You can bring your eligible dependents (that means your spouse or partner, and your children up to 23 years old);
• No English requirements, although there is a fee for those who have less than functional English;
• No academic qualification requirements;
• No business management skills or fund management experience requirements;
• You can apply from either inside or outside Australia;
• Flexible residential requirements. You need only reside in Australia 40 days per year, which means you can continue to attend to business and personal affairs abroad while your family live and work in Australia;
• 5 year visa; and
• Most importantly, a pathway to permanent residency and the Australian Citizenship.
The criteria you do need to fulfil are, you must
• Have net personal assets of AUD 5 million between you and your spouse;
• Be nominated by an Australian state or a territory or Austrade;
• Meet Australia’s health and character requirements;
• Have no debt owing to the Australian Government; and
• Be willing and able to make an investment of AUD 5 million into a Complying Investment Framework fund.
The Complying Investment Framework governs where the investment has to be held. For 3 years of your visa, the full $5 million must be invested into:
20% Venture Capital and Private Equity – this is used to invest in Australian start-ups and small private companies
50% Approved Managed Funds -this is used to invest in new companies listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX). Fifty percent.
20% Balancing Investment – this is the remaining total of investments can comprise any of the above 2 categories
You remain the legal owner of the money during and after the investment period. If your investment grows during that time, that growth belongs to you too, subject to Australian tax laws. Once the minimum investment period is complete, your investment and any capital gains acquired during the period, is returned to you.
Of course, there are risks involved with any financial investment but there are a number of fund providers you can choose from. You should speak with an independent financial advisor before making any big decisions.
The first step in applying for a Significant Investor visa is deciding which Australian state or territory you want to live in. All parts of Australia have their own unique benefits, and we can help with anywhere in Australia including:
• New South Wales for Sydney;
• Victoria for Melbourne; or
• If you enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle, South Australia for Adelaide.
Once you have decided where you want to live, you can lodge an Expression of Interest. If you meet the criteria, you will then be invited to submit a formal application.
If you are successful, you will be granted a visa of 5 years, and you can apply for Permanent Residency after just 3 years.
We are experienced in assisting with the requirements for Significant Investor visas including:
• Applying for state sponsorship;
• Demonstrating the source of your investment; and
• Proving the necessary evidence for including your spouse and children in the application.
