Elvis – Movie Review | The Best Actor Oscar race has begun!

Elvis is the long awaited and highly anticipated film from visionary Australian filmmaker Baz Luhrmann (Rome + Juliet, Moulin Rouge!, Strictly Ballroom) The Story – A musical biopic that explore the life and music of Elvis Presley (Austin Butler), through the prism of his complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks).

The Cast – Austin Butler, Tom Hanks, Helen Thomson, Richard Roxburgh, Olivia DeJonge

The Team – Baz Luhrmann (writer/director), Catherine Martin (Costume and Production Design), Sam Bromell, Craig Pearce and Jeremy Doner (writing)

The Good – Austin Butler elevates a mediocre script with a rollicking performance for which the king himself would’ve given his blessing.

The Bad – Luhrmann tries to tell far too much of his subjects story which results in underbaked plot threads and a lack of character development for necessary characters like Priscilla (Olivia DeJonge) and Vernon (Richard Roxburgh).

The Oscar Prospects – Best Actor, Costume Design, Production Design, Hair and Makeup

The soundtrack boasts a fun selection of new songs from the likes of Doja Cat, Eminem and Eurovision winners Måneskin, as well as numerous bangers from Elvis’ catalogue performed by Butler himself. There’s also a surprisingly delightful mashup of A Little Less Conversation and Britney Spears’ Toxic.
