The USCIS fee to renew a green card is $540, and the USCIS fee to apply for naturalization is currently $725. That’s $1,265 in fees to do both.
This cost might be an obstacle to applying for U.S. citizenship with an expired green card for some individuals. But it’s not compulsory to renew an expired green card before applying for citizenship.
