India has some of the strictest gun laws in the world, but it’s not all bad news for gun nuts. A variety of pistols, revolvers, rifles, and shotguns are available for purchase in India after you have a firearms license. And yes, you can use them for self-defence – unlike in my home country of New Zealand.

I’ll take you through the basics of guns in India including what weapons are available for self-defence, how to get a gun license in India, and what guns are available second hand (imported pre-1986) and brand new from the Indian Ordnance Factory Board.
