Portugal visas for UK nationals – Golden Visa, D7 visa, D2 visa (2021)

Portugal tax and visa guides

I’ve done a more detailed video on this topic linked below,

Portugal residency visas explained: D7, D2, NHR & Golden Visa EU citizenship

But to summarise:

Up until December last year, UK nationals were EU citizens and therefore had the automatic right to reside in the EU.

As British nationals are no longer EU citizens, we need to apply for a visa in order to secure our residency in the EU.

There are many visa options in Portugal but the ones that tend to be of most interest are Golden Visa, D7 visa and D2 visa.

I put them on two distinct tracks, with the Golden Visa being on its own track because it’s quire distinctive, and the D2 and D7 visas on their own track as they are very similar.

All provide similar benefits in that you are able to bring family with you to Portugal, proficiency in Portuguese is not required, permanent residency is available and also citizenship after 5 years of residency in Portugal. All routes are gateways into the Non Habitual Residence (NHR) scheme too, and I’ve done a separate video on this here.

The decision as to which visa path to choose ultimately comes down to a trade off between cost and flexibility.

The Golden Visa route requires a large investment and fees are relatively high however there is little in terms of time requirement here.

Conversely, the D7 and D2 visas require less of a monetary commitment , but there is a necessity to spend more time in Portugal which is likely to bring you into tax residency in Portugal.

This may in fact be a good thing due to the Non Habitual Residence (NHR) scheme and indeed I have clients living here under NHR that pay very little tax and in some cases no tax at all.

However, you need to do an individual assessment of your situation and how it will be treated under NHR.

Also, if you are considering the Golden Via route, please be aware of changes that are occurring from January 2022 – see video below:
