“Galina Dimova, as a musician and I, as a visual artist, spent July in Skagaströnd, Iceland at the Nes Artist Residency, to develop further the visual, sonic, and musical performance “Sonitus Urbanitatis”, initiated with fellow artist/musician Dimitris Tsoukas in late 2019.
During our preliminary correspondence, we offered to have a free piano concert if there was an appropriate space and piano available, which was gladly taken up, since there was indeed an excellent piano, and audio-visual equipment at the local church, Hólaneskirkja, a beautifully designed work of modernism. After we met our fellow residents, a mixture of performers, writers, poets, sound artists and musicians, visual and media artists, we invited anyone who wanted to participate, in any form they wished, choosing any of the musical pieces, or proposing alternatives if necessary. A taste of the result, “Sonitus Borealis” can be seen in this five minute “medley”.
However, we could not help comparing our experience at the small community of less than 500 people in relation to attitudes in Cyprus. The openness, generosity, trust, belief in cultural values and the necessity of infrastructure contrasts with the closeness and parsimony of our society in this sphere. It is no wonder that Iceland, with half the population of Cyprus, can boast an array of world class musicians, visual artists, authors, tv shows and films. It is not in the DNA; it is in the priorities and attitudes of a society.
Many thanks to all the people who collaborated with or helped us.”
