Hon Lennox Linton, Opposition Leader of UWP Dominica speaks out on Al Jareeza's "Diplomats For Sale"

WELL, now that I have had the opportunity of digesting that Al Jazeera special, my belly full – I’ve been getting a lot of feedback from UWP supporters who are concerned about the references to the PL in this special – I say, step back for a minute and analyze what it is you have seen

FIRST, the “conversations” are not between the PL and the undercover investigator – it is between OJ and David Bruney, both of which presented no proof that they, in fact, speak on behalf of the PL, they only proclaim they do proclamations that were NEVER confirmed by the PL or anyone remotely attached to the party, much less directly. Nowhere in the story does the PL make any declarations that incriminate him in anything illegal – in fact, the reporter states that clearly “there is no mention of campaign donations”
.
SECONDLY, at the outset, the reporter states that it was made clear that anyone appointed ambassador by the opposition MUST be of use to the island, bringing jobs and investments, in order to develop the island. Who among us would disagree with that? SO, any memorandum that follows that stipulation MUST have as its foundation, investment, and jobs for Dominicans. Again I ask, who among us disagrees with that? If we are able to lure, says Bill Gates, as an ambassador-at-large, and he, in turn, decides to invest some of the billions he has spread over the world and bring in other investors, in a tech venture in Dominica, who going to protest that? surely not the young people who are attracted to technology. Remember, we have a Minister of technology who’s the most famous moment in all the years he has held that position is to hold up a tablet over his head in St Joseph. Since then, what happen? Any tech jobs open up in Dominica? So I ask again, who would protest that? NOW, juxtapose that against a prime minister who sits in his office and makes personal deals with rogue individuals – remember? Monfared was in Skerrit office when Skerrit himself offers him a diplomatic position? Need I remind you all of that?

FINALLY, to sum it up, all this grief some of you are expressing about references to the PL in this report is what they sometimes refer to in American politics as a nothing burger – cup your hands as if you were holding a burger – see anything between your fingers? NO! exactly, there ain’t nothing to it — you have OJ discussing with DB saying they speak for the PL, who himself does NOT confirm that anywhere in the story nor does the reporter imply that; you have a reference to an MOU which is based on a stipulation that the person who would be appointed MUST bring jobs and investment to Dominica – IN ANY CASE, this MOU is what you call a BLANKET AGREEMENT, meaning that it is the basis of any agreement you make with someone, like a standard contract to do work or rent a car, and proof of that is the reference to “Ambassador A”, where “A” represents whomever that named person may be when the agreement is being finalized, and furthermore, if you pause the video on the MOU you will see it says that “”appointment of ‘Prospective Ambassador A’ it is necessary and imperative that said Ambassador A be of good and unblemished character as a potential appointee to the diplomatic core of the Commonwealth of Dominica and the essential requirement that such appointee be capable of satisfying all aspects of due diligence””. It goes on to further state “”given the required and necessary experience, capacity and qualification of the Prospective Ambassador A”” the individual will be appointed “”to the role of Ambassador-at-Large for the primary purpose of utilizing his expertise and experience in the realm of qualifications indicated within said curriculum vitae”” and the reporter’s statement that the MOU promises the ambassadorship to “another foreign national” is false, because the MOU only states “Prospective Ambassador A”, without declaring nationality; you also have OJ and DB making deals and sending their bank details to collect a money for themselves but no bank details or money for the PL or the party — that’s what you got here, insofar as the PL and the UWP are concerned – nothing incriminating, just name-dropping by OJ and deals he and DB make supposedly to help the party – it might give you indigestion, but that’s all.

Let’s face it, people, you may not like it but you cannot expect a reputable news agency to come up with a report like that and not look to see if the other side is up to the same shenanigans – CBS did it when they had their 60 minutes report, you must have expected that with Al Jazeera – contrast their nothing report on the PL and the UWP with all the dealings of Skerrit and Nanthan and the rest – there is no comparison.
