Lawmakers Scuffle Over Montenegro Religion Law in Serbian Parliament

A scuffle broke out between opposition and ruling party lawmakers in the Serbian Parliament, Friday, December 27, after the leader of an opposition party protested a law passed earlier in the day in Montenegro, which critics say seeks to undermine the Serbian Orthodox Church.

Under the law, religious communities in the tiny Adriatic state would need to prove property ownership from before 1918, when Montenegro joined what would later become Yugoslavia.

Critics of the legislation say it is an attempt to promote the small Montenegrin Orthodox Church, which is not recognized by other major churches, at the expense of the Serbian Orthodox Church, the dominant church in the country of 620,000 people. (Reuters)
