The omnibus budget package passed by Congress has few provisions pertaining to immigration. Many immigration provisions were in place, but unused green cards could not be reclaimed due to the absence of a critical component. This is why five democratic senators filed legislation introduced the relief act, which would give millions of immigrants in green card backlogs sweeping relief.
Let’s see what the relief act is now.
The Relief Act for Immigrant Workers and their Families, which would reduce the backlogs for family and employment-based green cards. The spouses and children of lawful permanent residents would be reclassified as “immediate relatives” under this bill, and their petitions would be exempt from the annual green card limit. Immigrant children who meet the criteria for legal residency are likewise protected from aging out of their status by this provision.
