On October 12th Spain celebrated one of the most important national holidays – Fiesta Nacional de España or the Hispanic Day. On this day in 1492, Christopher Columbus, leading a Spanish expedition, had discovered the Americas. Therefore, in this episode of #RegulaChronicles we’ve decided to look at the latest version of the biometric Spanish passport issued in 2015.
The paper-made data page of this e-passport is covered with a transparent holographic layer. Two holograms in the form of the coat of arms can be found on the data page: one – in the middle, the other – on the right side. Another spectacular hologram spelling out the country’s name in Spanish, is shimmering all over the holder’s portrait. In addition, an impeccable secondary holder’s image which consists of the holder’s data is reproduced on page three using inkjet printing. Furthermore, the area with the passport number is highlighted, when the document is tilted.
One of the e-passport’s page spreads portrays the Niagara Spanish Aero Car designed by Spanish civil engineer Leonardo Torres y Quevedo. It is the very first passenger cable car in North America. Although the Aero Car travels between two points in Canada, it crosses the border between Canada and the USA four times each trip due to the way the river elbows. The image of the Aero Car luminesces in green, blue and red in UV light, while it fully disappears in IR.
Another page spread incorporates the images of the Christopher Columbus’ expedition vessels. The design of the vessels came from Rafael Monleon y Torres, the artist appointed by the Spanish Commission to assist in the design and construction.
The passport images were taken from our information reference system «Secure Documents Ultimate»:
