Regula Chronicles: Maltese passport, 2019

This April #RegulaChronicles is going to Malta, the country whose passport has been recognised as the Best new ePassport at HSP EMEA 2020. The event was held in Lisbon, Portugal on 9-11 March 2020.

The new Maltese passport launched in November 2019 has a polycarbonate data page, where the primary holder’s photo and biographical data are laser engraved. When looking at the holder’s portrait, pay attention to a DOVID in the shape of the Maltese coat of arms at the bottom right corner. Then glance right to see a transparent window in the form of a cross and an MLI.

Intricate blind embossing on both sides of the data page deserves special mention. On the bio-data page, it shows multiple Maltese crosses, performed all over the holder’s data. On the title page, the blind embossing ornament protects the interwoven hinge.

The visa pages comprise images of the renowned landmarks of Malta, such as the Manoel Theatre (Europe’s third-oldest working theatre) and the Auberge de Castille (now the office of the Prime Minister of Malta). Each visa page incorporates a watermark demonstrating the Maltese cross and the luzzu, a traditional fishing boat from the Maltese islands.

Finally, the pages uncover floating numeration in UV light – the number of the inner page gradually moves, changing its position from one page to another.

The passport images were taken from our information reference system «Secure Documents Ultimate»:
