Nigerian-Greek basketball star Giannis Antetokounmpo’s mother and brother were granted honorary Greek citizenship on Thursday, following President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou’s official decision signed on September 6.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis hosted the ceremony during which Veronica and Alex were sworn in.
Under the current Greek legislation, they would still not be formally eligible to obtain citizenship even though his mother has lived in Greece since 1991 and his brother was born in the country in 2001.
Giannis Antetokounmpom, who was granted Greek citizenship in 2013, also attended the ceremony and thanked the Prime Minister.
