EB-5 & U.S. Immigration | TRD Shanghai Showcase and Forum panel

The Real Deal’s second annual U.S. Real Estate Showcase & Forum in Shanghai took place just one week after an election dominated by the subject of immigration. Speculation on Trump’s future border policies became a part of every panel and conversation at the event — naturally, the “EB-5 and U.S. Immigration” panel was no exception. TRD’s managing web editor Hiten Samtani, who moderated the panel, opened by asking former Governor George Pataki what impact president-elect Trump could have on Chinese immigration.

“There’s a lot of misunderstanding on that,” Gov. George Pataki said, “Donald Trump won for a lot of reasons — one was his very strong stance against illegal immigration. And often, in the media and in the public, the distinction between legal and illegal immigration gets lost.”

Both Pataki and Ambassador Charles Gargano offered similarly calming messages in their respective keynote addresses, assuring the crowd that the U.S. will not be closing its borders to those emigrating legally, with Gargano plugging the EB-5 program as a good way to do it.

The panel, moderated by TRD managing web editor Hiten Samtani, also featured: Nicholas Mastroianni II, founder and CEO of the U.S. Immigration Fund; Scott Alper, president of Witkoff; Connor Chen, founder of EB5Sir; and Yuan Shaozhong, director of QWOS.
