Georgia is in the Caucasus region. A region between Eastern Europe and Western Asia. Georgia became independent after the collapse of the Soviet Union and in the last 3 decades, it has made a lot of economic reforms, making the country currently one of the most attractive in the region.

Despite its geographic location, Georgia is not part of the European Union, and is not likely to join it anytime soon. Especially considering the situation in the regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. It is an aspiring member of NATO though.

Residence Permit in Georgia

-The most common types of residence permits in Georgia are for employment, or if you have a family member in the country.
-We will focus on options if you are an independent businessman, an investor, a digital nomad or if you want to live a passive life and retire in Georgia.
Staying in Georgia Visa Free

Georgia is one of the most flexible countries in the world in its visa regime. If we consider highly attractive countries with a good quality of life, low cost of living and taxes, Georgia might be the most flexible in terms of visa policies.

Most Western citizens can come to Georgia and stay for one year visa free. That is exactly what you heard. You can come to the country, live in Georgia the whole year without having to get a residence permit.

Company formation (company directors, self-employed people)

-One of the best options to get a residence permit in Georgia is by opening a company and hiring yourself.
-By owning your own company, and running it actively, you will have grounds to live in Georgia.
-You don’t have to hire anyone if you are not a citizen (like in many EU countries), and you will still be able to get a residence permit.
-There is a minimum yearly turnover for you to be able to renew your residence permit by opening a company in Georgia.
-The minimum turnover is 50.000 GEL or approximately 16000 USD per year if you are a freelancer.
-You need to reach this minimum turnover every year in order to renew it.

Residence Permit by Buying Property in Georgia

-The second option which I consider ideal is by investing in property in Georgia.
-Buying property in Georgia is a great option, and is open to citizens of almost all countries.
-However, to be eligible for this type of residence permit, you need to buy a property with a value of at least 100.000 USD. You can also apply with your immediate family members like your spouse and children, without having to invest more.

Residency by Investment in Georgia

If you do not want to renew your permit every year and you want more flexibility with your investments, Georgia also has a residence by investment program.

In this category you have to invest 300k in Georgia. It can be in property but it can also be in different types of investments, like a company.

The other key advantage here is that you will have a 5 year residence permit, instead of having to renew it every year.

Permanent residency in Georgia and Citizenship by naturalization

To acquire permanent residency in Georgia, you need to live in the country for 6 years consecutively preceding your application. In Georgia time as a student does not count towards permanent residence.

Georgia Citizenship:

-if you ultimate goal is to acquire Georgia citizenship, you will need at least 10 years living in Georgia. This can be shortened if you are married to a Georgian citizen, but in most cases 10 years is the rule.

Advantages of living in Georgia:

-Taxes. The Georgian tax system is extremely favorable for those working in Georgia.
-The one year visa free stay in Georgia is another huge advantage of it.
-Pro-business environment.

Disadvantages

-The location of Georgia can be a disadvantage for some, as you are a bit further away from most countries in Europe.
-The Georgian language can be quite difficult to learn at the beginning. They have their own alphabet, with 33 letters. However, you can easily get around with English, and most signs are both in Georgian but also in the Latin script.
-Salaries are low in Georgia, so if you are coming to the country to look for a job, this is probably not a good idea.
