Hear from cardiologist Mark Lanzieri, MD (SGUSOM ’85) as he tells us about developing Grenada’s first cardiac cath lab. Learn how he has been involved in a visiting cardiology program since 2001. Learn about the outpatient consultative cardiology procedures in the clinic, like would be done in any cardiology office. The clinic was performing echocardiography.
Since that time, the program has grown to include pacemaker implantation and most recently coronary angiography. The services were able to grow because all the pieces were in the right place at the right time; from the administration, to the General Hospital, to US industry support.
There was limited cardiac care in Grenada and the Caribbean before 2001. To give us the example of pacemaker implantation, pacemakers were implanted in the US in 1959, and in 2001 the first one was implanted in Grenada. The program coordinates technology, care providers and medical personnel to support t the program.
