MONTENEGRO: REFUGEES CONTINUE ARRIVING

(2 Apr 1999) Albanian/Nat

Kosovo Albanian refugees are continuing to flood over the border into the neighbouring republic of Montenegro.

Many have set up home in temporary shelters there, or are occupying empty buildings and vehicles.

Others are continuing their journey southwards towards Albania.

Three refugee camps have been set up in Albania and many other refugees have been taken in by relatives or well-wishers in Albania.

31-thousand Kosovo Albanians have fled to Montenegro since air strikes began ten days ago.

News is now circulating of a suspected coup plot in Montenegro backed by Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic, adding to refugees’ fears of remaining there.

Montenegro is part of the Yugoslav Federation but its leadership has distanced itself from Belgrade’s policy of ethnic cleansing.
