January 8th evening was truly a momentous occasion for the medical students who were formally enrolled at the International American University College of Medicine (IAU).

The 13th White Coat ceremony which was held at Kimatrai Hotel in Vieux Fort saw the students being draped in their white coats and stethoscopes creating quite a spectacle.

During the solemn occasion the students read the Hippocratic Oath which outlined what is expected of them as physician in training. It reads in part: I publicly acknowledge and accept the privileges and responsibilities given to me as a physician in training and dedicate myself to provide care to those who need ….

The various speakers which consisted of officials of the school and students spoke about the school in glowing terms.

In his welcome remarks Dean of Basic Sciences Dr. Jayant Mohite described the event as a landmark one. He said that the students made the right choice by deciding to enroll with the University, adding that it will equip them with the necessary tools to prepare them for the future.

The road ahead is very long and challenging, Dr. Mohite said.

Dr. Olusina Adesanya impressed upon the students, the need to always respect themselves and behave in a professional manner. He added they will be monitored and they should be mindful of that.

Respect the school, Respect its facilities and respect the community, he urged them.

He also exhorted them to be consistent in their performance in exams and strike a balance between work and leisure.

Associate Director of Admissions Sajith Kumar urged the students not to give up despite the challenges they may face. He advised them to keep working hard to achieve their goals, adding that the school will play its role in that regard.

We at the International American University will try to ensure you get quality education. Our Dean and faculty are hard working and our system is of a substantial standard, Kumar said.

In their brief remarks the students said that they felt they have made the right choice by deciding to enroll at the university and pledge to work hard to achieve their goals.

At the ceremony Taha Djirdeh a second semester student was presented with the award for the top student in Bio-chemistry NBME examination with a score of 96th percentile. Djirdeh attributed his success to his hard work and determination and the will of God.

Its not a sprint. It is a marathon. Nobody can motivate you but yourself, Djirdeh said.

Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. James Villanueva in congratulating Djirdeh for his achievement described the NBME exam as one of the most difficult one to pass. He also described Djirdeh as a student who is hardworking and determined to achieve his goal.

According to the Public Relations officer, Mr. Sibi Gopalakrishnan, Over 150 students attend IAU and most of the students originate from either United States or Canada.
