From what we can see, Mexico is shutting its doors to expats living in the country on a tourist visa.

Countless digital nomads and expats reportedly didn’t receive the typical tourist visa for up to 180 days.

In an effort to eliminate foreigners who have been living in the country on a tourist visa, Mexico is encouraging digital nomads and perpetual travelers to apply for temporary residence.

In order to qualify for temporary residence, you’re expected to have an income of at least $2,000 a month or savings averaging at least $33,000 a month over an 8 month period.

The permit is issued for an initial 1 year and can be extend for 3 years. Once the 4 years are up, you’re welcome to apply for permanent residency which requires a monthly income of $3,000 or savings of at least $120,000.

In case you’re unwilling or unable to apply for residency in Mexico, it’s time to move on to a different country.

Some countries with relaxed visa policies include the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Colombia and Ecuador.

There is really no need to overthink the situation and if all you want is spend a few months per year in Mexico to get out of the cold weather or have a nice cultural change then you certainly don’t need to apply for residency.
