British Indian Ocean Territory (Chagos Archipelago) Citizens raise awareness of our story, our immigration issues caused by historical unfairness by the British Government.
The Nationality & Borders Bill is an opportunity for the UK government to fix and restore our rightful British Citizenship by descent. This Bill is not only about asylum seekers and refugees. The first part of this Bill is about Nationality & Citizenship Issues for the 14 British Overseas Territories, of which BIOT is one.
In it’s current state, the Bill doesn’t take into consideration the unique history of the native-born and descendants of BIOT. They were exiled from their homeland in 1960s and 1970s by the UK government to Mauritius and Seychelles. They were banned from ever returning to BIOT. This means there children and grandchildren cannot be born on BIOT, and thus giving them the rights to British Citizenship. Chagossian descendants are scattered in UK, Seychelles and Mauritius. Families are separated, being deported by the Home Office, through no fault of their own.
MPs and UK Parliament needs to include Chagossians as a separate ammendment which enables their children and grandchildren and future descendants to have their rightful British Citizenship so there families can be together again.
The descendants wish to remain in the UK and have their families with them. This is their rights.
Please share this video to help raise awareness in preparation of Report Stage when MP Henry Smith will raise the Chagossian ammendment to the House at Parliament. MPs must support this ammendment. We will not stop until our voices are heard.
