The official name of Poland is the Republic of Poland and it is located in Central Europe. It shares border with seven countries; Germany to west; Czech Republic and Slovakia to the south; Ukraine and Belarus to the east; Baltic Sea and Kaliningrad Oblast (a Russian exclave) and Lithuania to the north. Poland is a unitary state consisting of 16 administrative subdivisions. Warsaw is the capital of Poland and it is the largest city in the country. Poland is known for its medieval architecture and Jewish heritage.
The name Poland comes from the name of the tribe “Polanie” which means “people living in open fields”. A Polish state and the name Poland existed as far back as the year 966 during the reign of Mieszko I. The Kingdom of Poland was founded shortly after in 1025.
Poland has a total area of 312,679 square kilometres (120,726 sq mi) with a population of over 38.5 million inhabitants. It is the 69th largest country in the world and the 9th largest in Europe by total area. Poland is the 34th most populous country in the world. About 35% of poles live the abroad. The people of Poland are well educated, with 90% of Poles having completed at least a secondary education. The national symbol of the country is a white-tailed eagle.
The highest point in Poland standing at 2499 m (8199 ft) is the peak of Rysy in the Tatra Mountains. Forests cover over 30% of Poland’s land area and the country is the fourth most forested in Europe. Nicolaus Copernicus, the famous 16th century astronomer who first suggested the sun was the center of our universe was born in Thorn, Royal Prussia, part of the Kingdom of Poland.
The majority of universities in Poland provide some kind of student accommodation at low cost. The quality of Polish higher institutions is very high.
Six universities in Poland feature in the QS World University Rankings® 2018, while 22 rank within the top 300 in the QS EECA University Rankings 2018 – a dedicated ranking of the top universities in Emerging Europe and Central Asia.
