While the Portuguese are not over the top formal there are some basic conventions to be observed when socializing or doing business. In fact the dress code is pretty much the same for both activities.

In the boardroom men wear suits or jackets and ties; while women wear dresses, or slacks or skirts with long sleeved blouses. Nobody wears short sleeves for business. However, when the weather is unusually hot it may be acceptable to remove your jacket; but you should wait for your host to do so first.

To the fashion conscious Portuguese personal appearance is very important; particularly in a city environment where clothes indicate both social standing and levels of success. People tend to be very brand aware, so high quality designer clothing is a good way to impress. A lot of pride is taken in finding the best labels, designs and fabrics.
