The Diversity Immigrant Visa program, also known as the DV program or green card lottery, is a United States government lottery program for receiving permanent residency in the U.S. Under this program, 55,000 diversity green cards are made available to applicants from select countries whose citizens have low representation in the U.S. More than 23 million people apply online every year. The U.S. Dept. of State selects approximately 100,000 applicants from the global pool. The number is intentionally kept higher than 55,000, to ensure that all vacancies get filled. Many applicants who get selected in the lottery initially, do not meet with the general immigration requirements and therefore get disqualified during the process. Many fraudulent services charge a fee for virtually guaranteeing a green card through the DV program. However, the U.S. Dept. of State strongly discourages applicants from engaging with such fraudulent services. The names of the DV-2021 green card lottery winners will be announced this year on June 6, 2020. All applicants are encouraged to visit the Dept. of State website for further instructions.
