Reports state that a number of British entrepreneurs contemplating to “buy” citizenship from countries offering visa-free access to the European Union have soared sharply as UK passport-holders are likely to lose their rights to freedom of movement across the EU by the end of the year.
So what are your options to maintain your access to the EU?

If you have the ability to invest in maintaining your access to the EU, there are a number of options available.
The spotlight has been cast to several countries which offer a range of residency rights, visa-free travel to the EU and citizenship to investors in a local business or property like Cyrus, Malta, Portugal, Austria and several Caribbean islands,
Citizens of certain Caribbean sovereign states including St Lucia and St Kitts & Nevis also enjoy preferred access to the EU due to close ties with EU members as a result of historic, diplomatic and modern trade agreements
In December, it was reported, through Cyprus’ government documents, that several donors to Britain’s ruling Conservative Party had sought citizenship of the island since the 2016 Brexit referendum.

Wealthy entrepreneurs seeking alternative citizenship or residence by investment climbed 40% in the first quarter of 2020 versus the first quarter of 2019, before flattening during the COVID-19 lockdown in the second quarter.
However, interest has risen again since July 1 as the end of the Brexit transition phase approaches.
Portugal typically processes investment migration applications in three months but only grants EU residency to investors and visa-fee travel to just 26 countries.

If you don’t want to invest money to retain your access, you need to look at obtaining residency in an EU country before December 31st, 2021.
Not only high-net-worth individuals are interested in staying within the EU, a study conducted by Daniel Tetlow, Oxford in Berlin and Daniel Auer, research fellow at the WZB’s unit Migration, Integration, Transnationalization showed that a number of Britons are moving to the continental EU Member States, the highest in ten years.
“OECD figures and national government statistics have shown that the number has risen continuously since 2010 with an exaggerated spike since the Brexit referendum in 2016,” – the study reads
The study claims that the uncertainty surrounding Brexit has certainly caused large numbers of people to pack their bags in both directions.
While currently, dual EU citizenship is permitted for these people, after December 31, 2020, those who want to maintain their European citizenship rights will have to give up their British citizenship.
