Diamond tycoon Fugitive on trial in Dominica

(10 Jun 2021) Fugitive businessman Mehul Choksi appeared in court once again in Dominica on Thursday for a bail hearing relating to his arrest for illegal entry into the eastern Caribbean country.
Choksi fled India in 2018 after local authorities wanted to interrogate him about an alleged $1.8 billion scam at a large state-owned bank.
He took residency in Antigua and Barbuda, from where India’s federal investigators have asked for his extradition.
At the end of May, he was arrested in nearby Dominica, accused of entering the country illegally.
The 62-year-old Choksi and his business partner, Nirav Modi, are wanted in their native India on a string of charges that include corruption, money laundering and criminal conspiracy.
Modi, who ran an international jewelry empire that reaches from India to New York, is facing extradition proceedings in London where he has been held without bail since he was arrested there in 2019.
Police in India raided the homes and offices of Modi and Mehul Choksi in 2018 and seized nearly $800 million in jewels and gold.
A strict gag order is in place by the court in Dominica. Neither prosecutors nor defense attorneys are permitted to speak with the press about the case.
Choksi is expected back in court on Friday.
