It’s well known that only native speakers from one of seven countries can legally teach English on and E2 visa in South Korea…until now! Actually, in mid-2017 a loophole was introduced which widens the pool of people who can legally do E2 work. Below is the information referenced in the video that you might need. 1. Text from the Visa Issuance Manual (June 2019 edition):
전문인력 및 유학생의 비영어권 배우자에 대한 영어 회화지도 강사 허용(‘17.7.3.)
‣ 전문인력(E-1~E-7)* 및 유학생(이공계 석․박사 이상에 한함)의 배우자로서 영어권 출신이 아니라도 TESOL**자격을 소지하고 학사 이상의 학위를 소지한 자 또는 동등 이상의 학력이 있는 자
* 호텔·유흥(E-6-2) 자격은 제외함
** TESOL: 영어가 모국어가 아닌 사람이 비영권국가에서 영어를 가르칠 수 있도록 자격을 부여하는 영어전문 교사 양성과정
2a. Non-native English speakers eligible for this loophole:
– Spouses of those who hold an E1 through and E7 visa
– Spouses of those who graduated with a Master’s or PhD from a Korean university in a science field
– Spouses of those holding an investor’s visa
2b. Documents you must prepare in your home country:
– National-level criminal check + apostille
– Notarized photocopy of your bachelor’s degree + apostille
– TESOL certificate (must say how many hours the course was comprised of; assume 100 hours is the minimum allowed)
*If your country doesn’t use the apostille system, you must instead have documents verified at the Korean embassy in your home country. Check guidance on how Canadians prepare documents for E2 visa applications for an example; contact the Korean embassy in your home country for exact details.
