2 For many foreign nationals, moving to Portugal is a permanent decision as they decide to continue to live in the country by renewing their residence permit.

For those who are interested in remaining in the country indefinitely, obtaining Portuguese citizenship can be the relocation goal from the very beginning.

3 There are four routes via which a foreign national may obtain citizenship and the most common tends to remain the one through naturalization.

Nonetheless, applicants can also quality for citizenship through marriage, provided that this is applicable in their case.

4 Citizenship through naturalization

Foreign nationals who have been living in Portugal for at least 6 years as lawful residents can apply for citizenship through naturalization.

The applicant must be at least 18 years and he or she must have sufficient knowledge of the Portuguese language as well as links to the community.

5 Citizenship through marriage

A foreign national married to a Portuguese citizen can obtain citizenship through marriage.

This manner of acquiring citizenship is available to those who have a Portuguese parent or grandparent.

The applicant will need to provide adequate proof of the stated family links.

8 Citizenship through ancestry

Another option to obtain Portuguese citizenship is for individuals of Sephardic Jew origin.

Several other conditions apply and proof of origin is important in this case.

9 Foreign nationals who wish to apply for citizenship through naturalization have several options for gaining and maintaining residence for the minimum 6 years.

Employment is a common route, however, obtaining a golden visa for real estate investment purposes is also an option for non-EU applicants who are able to make the minimum investment in property.
