Immigration Budget Reconciliation: FIXING VISA BACKLOG / Provide Path To Citizenship For Millions #usimmigrationnewsupdate#budgetreconciliation#visabacklog
Both Houses of Congress included plans to expand residency permits for some undocumented immigrants in a $ 3.5 billion budget plan approved last month. But in the weeks since, when lawmakers drafted the budget and enacted it, the immigration proposal has been rejected by Republicans and threatened by a rift between moderate and progressive Democrats. A nonpartisan official overseeing the process refused to include Democrats’ immigration policies in the budget on Sept. 19. Senate leaders are now formulating alternative proposals that they hope they can influence and are considering other options, including ignorance of the Council of Parliament. Still, supporters of the immigration bill are calling on Democrats to keep going no matter what. Lujano, who is a volunteer for the nation’s largest immigrant youth advocacy group United We Dream, says she is tired of Democrats dumping breadcrumbs at immigrant communities during election years and then failing to deliver on those promises. While the scope of the current proposal and the likelihood of its adoption are uncertain, experts and supporters told Capital & Main that including the millions of immigrants already living and working in the United States translates to better working conditions, wages Higher levels and better access to health and safety network services, among other economic benefits, would result in foreign-born Americans alike. Many conservatives and moderates who support immigration reform for economic reasons say that reconciliation is not the way to do it. And some advocates say that even if Democrats were to succeed in some way, it would only be a first step in inviting and integrating more immigrants through improved visa and legal status systems.
