HELEN'S DRESS E-RESIDENCY – Dance of the Caryatide (2020)

The video is inspired by archaic dancers representations on ancient Greek vases, as well as on Isadora Duncan’s legendary dance performance in front of the Caryatides sculptural complex “Erechteion” at the Acropolis of Athens in early 20th century.

Loukia Richard’s dance in front of a kitsch “Erechteion” replica in southern Peloponnese aims at underlying the various cultural influences – from ancient art to post-modernism – a contemporary artist is subject to. The mythical Caryatides were Artemis’ priestesses, famous for their harmonious dance, through which they used to teach the principles of civilization.
The video was part of an exercise for the participants of the “Helen’s Dress” e-residency at Vamvakou Revival, Stavros Niarchos Foundation, Lakonia, Greece.

Video concept/ performance/ video shooting and cut by Christoph Ziegler and Loukia Richards
