According to a report published by Newsweek, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is preparing a new visa and immigration fee structure that will prevent legal US citizenship from being limited to the wealthy.
In a recent interview, USCIS director Ur Jaddou stated that they believe the US immigration system should not be reserved for the wealthy.
At the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, USCIS, which is financed wholly by fees paid for US visa and immigration applications, was on the brink of furloughing almost 70% of its 20,000 workers in the summer or 2020, amidst the fears that its revenue would run out after a COVID-induced visa and travel ban set by former US President, Donald Trump.
Regardless of those concerns, USCIS officials reported that the agency would conclude the year with a ‘large surplus.’
Jaddou stated that the temporary hiring suspension, spending controls, and no longer needing new biometric data for renewal benefits which began in March 2020, successfully saved USCIS.
