Portugal tax and visa guides

In this video I explore the difference in treatment between tax on crypto assets in the UK versus Portugal.

This is a new area and is constantly evolving and there are rumours that the tax free window of opportunity to realise gains here will soon be closed.

However, as it stands, profits from the sales of cryptocurrencies are not taxed here in Portugal, unless they are part of a professional/business activity.

I point out in the video that, if you are planning to relocate to Portugal and sell crypto here, it is important to be aware of the rules of the jurisdiction you are leaving and cite the UK’s 5 year anti-avoidance provisions.

As always, please always take personalised advice as cross border tax and investment planning is a complex area.

If you are looking to move to Portugal from outside the EU (which now includes the UK), you will need to go through a visa process in order to obtain your residency rights in Portugal. The most popular visa options currently are the Golden Visa, D7 visa and D2 visa.

Achieving residency will also be a gateway into the 10 year tax incentivised “Non Habitual Residence” (NHR) scheme.

I have recorded videos in both of these areas and include links to the videos below:
